Paper Airplanes is a nonprofit, international organization that conducts several programs for individuals affected by conflict and connects them with personal, volunteer tutors. Conflict-affected individuals are those who are refugees from areas with armed conflict, war, violence, and other risks of harm. These areas include the various countries in the Middle East and North Africa. These students have had to flee their home countries and have lost stable access to education. Paper Airplanes programs include an English tutoring program and a Student Advising program with the hope of bridging language and education gaps for those affected by conflict to allow them pursue higher education and employment. The purpose of starting a Stony Brook campus chapter of Paper Airplanes is to recruit new tutors to volunteer for the various programs that the organization offers to help conflict-affected individuals develop necessary professional skills. Additionally, the Stony Brook campus chapter would fundraise to donate the proceeds to the international organization, which will be used for scholarships toward higher education and professional development for conflict-affected individuals.
