ColorStack at Stony Brook University exists to address the immense lack of diverse students who identify as Black, LatinX, or Native American in the computer science (CS) major at Stony Brook University. As of the Summer of 2020, stated by the Computer Science Department Chair Professor Samir Das, less than one percent of CS students identify themselves as Black, and around four percent identify themselves as LatinX, and currently the percentage of students who identify as Native American is unknown but unfortunately the percentages known are decreasing. ColorStack aims to address this alarming proportion that is not only present at universities and colleges across the country, but also in the computing industry by doing the following Creating a safe space for students of color pursuing computer science to pursue their academic and professional aspirations in the field of computing. Ensuring each student is equipped with the resources and overall environment necessary to persist through the computer science major. Leveraging ColorStack’s national relationships with industry professionals and recruiting teams to best position our students for success in finding a career for themselves in the technological industry.
